Why isn't the paywall going away?

Updated

If a tool returned nothing on a particular article, it is almost always because that outlet uses a hard wall. Here is what is happening, and what to try next.

Hard walls send no text

Sites like the WSJ, The Times and The Washington Post check your subscription on the server and send no article text to logged-out readers. No tool can extract text that was never delivered β€” only a pre-existing public archive of that article can help.

Bot protection

Large publishers add Cloudflare-style checks that block automated fetches. A "Bot-protected" result means the page demanded a real-browser check our fetchers couldn't pass this time β€” retrying later sometimes works.

The metered edge case

On metered outlets your first few articles are delivered (and recoverable), then the wall drops and later articles stop coming through. An archived snapshot is the fallback.

What still works

For hard walls: check archive.today, ask a subscriber for a gift link, or read it free through your library (Libby / PressReader). See our guides on gift links and library access.

Live success rates

Unlike other tools, RemovePaywall publishes how often it works for each outlet, measured from real use. See the live list.

FAQ

The outlet likely uses a hard wall or added bot protection, so the text is never sent. Try an archive, a gift link, or your library.

Only when a public archive of the exact article exists β€” those are hard subscription walls.

Usually the site. Check our live success rates to see how often a given outlet actually comes through.
